Troubleshooting: Excavator Slew Ring Failure

A common issue with excavators is a grinding noise or excessive play in the swing function. For example, on a Caterpillar 330D, if you hear a loud grinding or popping noise when rotating the upper structure, it often indicates a failing slewing bearing or damaged slew gear teeth.

Diagnosis & Solution: Immediately stop operating the swing function. Inspect the bearing's grease purge ports for metal shavings, which confirm internal damage.
