Troubleshooting Guide: Slow Hydraulic Operation on a Komatsu PC360-7 Excavator
Fault Symptom: A customer reported that their Komatsu PC360-7 excavator experiences significantly slow movement in all hydraulic functions (boom, arm, bucket, and travel) after operating for about 30 minutes, especially under load.
Analysis and Solution:
Initial Checks: First, check the hydraulic oil level and check for any visible leaks. Ensure the correct type of hydraulic oil is being used. In this case, the oil level and type were correct.
Pressure Testing: The next step is to check the main relief pressure and pilot pressure. Connect pressure gauges to the main pump output ports. The pressure readings were initially normal at idle but dropped significantly below the standard values once the machine warmed up and was put under load. This pointed towards a problem with either the main hydraulic pump or the main control valve.
Pump Inspection: The investigation focused on the main hydraulic pump. A common cause for this symptom is internal wear in the pump, which becomes more pronounced as the hydraulic fluid heats up and its viscosity decreases. The pump was carefully removed and disassembled.
Root Cause: Upon inspection, the pump's swash plate, pistons, and valve plate showed signs of excessive scoring and wear. This internal leakage prevented the pump from building and maintaining the required pressure at operating temperature, leading to slow hydraulic response.
Solution: The solution was to completely overhaul the main hydraulic pump with a new OEM-spec repair kit, which included new pistons, a valve plate, seals, and bearings. The swash plate was also re-lapped to a smooth finish. After reassembly and reinstallation, the system was flushed, filled with new hydraulic fluid, and bled of air. A final pressure test confirmed that the pressures were stable and within the manufacturer's specifications even after prolonged operation. The excavator's hydraulic functions returned to normal speed and power.
